The Viking baseball team fought their way through three more tough games this week, with determination and plucky spirit.

“The kids aren’t giving up; they’re fighting till the end,” said coach Christian Gardiner. He said the boys are improving as they rack up game experience.

On Tuesday, April 27 the Vikings conceded to Friday Harbor 15-4. The first inning was a rocky start, with five Orcas errors and nine Wolverine runs, but toward the end of the game the Vikes racked up four runs and were starting to rattle the Friday Harbor coaches. Viking errors gave Friday Harbor 74% of their runs – “otherwise, it would have been 7-4, a much closer game,” said Gardiner.

Viking errors also contributed to the team’s losses to Concrete in a double-header Friday, April 30.

“In the first game, the starters did really well,” said Gardiner. “Tyler Nigretto gave up only four runs in four innings.” Seabern Geiger did the same in the second game. Despite strong starts in both games, final scores were 8-0 and 12-6. The team had “a bunch of steals” in the first game, said Gardiner. The Vikings are working on improving communication and defensive decision-making, and minimizing throwing errors.

“We’re hitting okay. We’re not giving up,” said Gardiner. “We’re pretty solid except for our infielder’s defense. They need to attack the ball and focus a little better.”

The Vikings’ final game, a double-header against Darrington on Tuesday, May 4, will determine whether the team goes to district playoffs. Results will be posted after the game.
