A look at the Vikings' recent games. The Sounder follows football, soccer and volleyball

Football

The Vikings orchestrated a remarkable second half comeback against the Concrete Lions at Dahl Field that fell just short in a 28-22 loss on Sept. 20.

The Lions hit the ground running, pushing the ball behind their offense line in a series of drives that ended in three touchdowns and a first half score of 20-0. The Viking offense struggled to find any rhythm while the Orcas defense, despite impressive moments,  gave generous chucks of yardage on self-inflicted penalties.

But a different Orcas team came out for the second half. The Viking offense opened the third quarter with a 45-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Miles Harlow to receiver Cameron Aragon, ending the quarter 20-6.

A fourth quarter Viking 18-yard pass from Harlow to receiver Ricardo DeAnda brought the ball to the one-yard line with Bullock running in for the score on the ensuing play. A two-point conversion brought the score to 20-14.

Seconds later the Lions returned the kickoff for a touchdown, leaving Orcas down 14-28 with 4:11 remaining. The Vikings rebounded on their next possession with passes, culminating in a touchdown pass to Aidan Kruse and a two-point conversion to DeAnda, advancing the score 28-22. The Lions controlled the ball on their last possession for the win.

Girls soccer

Orcas traveled to Mt. Vernon Christian for a 3-0 loss to the Hurricanes on Sept. 16.

The Hurricanes put together a strong drive for their first score while the second score slowly rolled into the goal after some confusion from the Viking defense. The Vikings played stronger defense in the second half with the only score from an errant goalie kick that was immediately kicked back into the goal.

The Viking offense continued to struggle to get the ball past midfield.

“We played a fairly educated, talented team that knew how to play the ball. But our girls played with heart and played very hard,” said Head Coach Chris Doherty.

On Sept. 18, Orcas hosted Coupeville in a 4-0 loss at Dahl Field.

Volleyball

On Sept. 16, the Viking Volleyball team traveled to Shoreline Christian and lost an intense five-game duel.

Scores were 25-16, 18-25, 17-25, 25-15 and 7-15.

“The difference in the match was our unforced errors, and as a young team, that will get better,” said Coach Gregg Sasan.

The Vikings rebounded with a win against Coupeville at Orcas High School on Sept. 18. Scores were 25-20, 19-25, 25-18 and 25-22.

“This was a tough match but we did much better, especially our defensive effort led by Bethany Hansen, Alena Garcia and Katy Minnis. Our hitters Maddie White and Hannah Brunner-Gaydos did a great job at the net,” Sasan said.

The Vikings played in the South Whidbey Tournament against Nooksack Valley High, South Whidbey and Omak High, Friday Harbor and Lopez Island on Sept. 21.
