High school football program seeking more participants

Although Vikings football is all set for the fall, more students are needed to make it a robust program.

“Football is alive on Orcas,” said Coach Justin Frausto. “We are hoping to have a 10-game schedule.”

Frausto is hosting an information meeting on Tuesday, March 28 at 5:30 p.m. in the high school commons area for interested students, parents and adults who might like to volunteer behind the scenes. Like last year, the team will be playing 8-man football players. There is a core group of players coming back for 2017 but more are needed. Orcas Christian School students are also eligible to play.

“We are coming off a couple of winning seasons,” said Frausto, who has been coaching football since 2005. “Our offense likes to spread the field out and give our athletes a chance to shine. Eight-man football is an exciting, face-paced, wide open type of game. Our goal is to ultimately get back to 11-man football but we’ll do 8-man for a while to build the program up.”

The team will participate in a three-day mini camp on Orcas in early June and the first practice is in mid-August.
