In the first game of the Interisland Volleyball Tournament at Lopez on Sept. 20, the Lopez Lobos succumbed to the Friday Harbor Wolverines in the best played 3 out of 5 games. Friday Harbor won the match overall.

Plagued by errors in the first couple of games, the Lopez Lobos quickly put their pre-game jitters aside and went at it with some aggressive net-play and points scored on kills in last-minute set ups. Though Friday Harbor dominated with points, the Lobos recovered several times from errors and gained focus and poise on the court throughout the games.

Gwenna Coiley attacked the ball ten times resulting in three kills. Emily PostvanderBurg attacked 30 times resulting in nine kills. Emily went five/five on her serves, with three aces scored overall. Erin Wilbur served seven/eight with one ace. Hanifa McGovern made four/six serves. Tamira Vojnar had two aces off her serves.

Orcas Vikings vs Friday Harbor Wolverines

In the second game of the tournament, the Orcas Vikings took out the Friday Harbor Wolverines in a complete five game match. In this of the titans, both teams contain seasoned veterans and displayed an intimidating degree of aggression at the front of the net.

Vikings Coach Greg Sasan said, “When I saw those young people carry themselves with confidence after a time out, I knew they would be ready to roll.”

Many of the Orcas Vikings had great personal games; these included Kathryn Tidwell, a Freshman, whose underhand serve alone netted the Vikings a total of 11 points, April Hoffman, with several kills at the net and various set ups, Emma Gallo-Chasanoff with several acing serves, Anika Thomas with more kills, and Sydney Harris who had multiple attacks at the net and several more kills.

Coach Altona commented: “My players are learning to chat out there, and call the ball. Errors were made on mistakes at the net and on set ups, but overall I was really pleased with their focus and their recoveries.”
