The Orcas Vikings lost 42 to 19 to the Port Townsend Redskins on Friday night, Sept. 19 in a head-to-head battle for points in the first quarter of the game.

Errors were mainly to blame in the battle for touchdowns, Coach Dahl reported; the Vikings, he said, were doing really well with 30 seconds left to go in the first half – the score was 7 to 6, with the Redskins leading, but then the Redskins kicked off to the Vikings, the Redskins forced a fumble, recovered the ball and threw long for another score.

The Redskins kicked off again and the younger Vikings team fumbled the ball behind the line of scrimmage, resulting in a turnover and a touchdown for the Redskins as the opposing team ran it back into the end zone, capitalizing on the Vikings’ error.

Despite the errors, Coach Dahl said, the young men played with a lot of determination and forced some turnovers of their own.

Cedric Wooding, Senior, intercepted a pass in the second quarter and scored a touchdown from the interception, while Jacob Hansen, sophomore, scored on a 16-yard run in the fourth quarter. But the kicks on both touchdowns were blocked by the opposing team.

Tyler Nigretto, junior, had a whopping 60-yard run, for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and Viking quarterback Taylor Diepenbrock, junior, kicked the extra point through the goal posts.

On offense, the Vikings’ leading rusher was Tyler Nigretto, halfback for 92 yards on the carry. Allen Coe, junior, playing tight end, had a really good game, said Coach Dahl, with 4 catches for 87 yards and with an impressive game played in his defensive capacity, as well.

Jacob Hansen, Cedric Wooding and Michael Langworthy, all played a good, tough defense.

“If it had not been for our errors,” said Coach Dahl, “the seven fumbles we had that resulted in five turnovers, and two of those going for touchdowns by the Redskins…those errors really hurt us. We can do a lot better in that department.”

Other stats for the Vikings include 5 out of 10 passes made by quarterback Taylor Diepenbrock resulted in gains of 92 yards for the Viking offense. The Orcas Viking football team plays again on Sept. 27 at Inglemoor JV in Bothell this coming week.
