Orcas rowers compete in Canada

The Orcas Island Rowing Team competed in the Brentwood Regatta this past weekend, April 25-27, in Mill Bay, British Columbia. Thirty-six teams competed in the event.

While the weather cooperated for this event, other boaters proved to be a challenge. The wake of one of the regatta assistant skiffs almost upturned an Orcas girls’ quad rowing shell. “I’ve never seen a shell survive being waked like that,” one of the officials was heard to say.

Despite very stiff competition, Orcas rowers faired well. Julian Glasser and Morgan Bormann, rowing a double, finished third in their heat and fifth out of 12 for the event. The boys’ quad, Barrett North, Sam Parish, Glasser, Bormann, and coxswain Grace Thompson, finished fourth in their heat and tenth out of 18 junior A boys quads.

Tika Thorson and Hannah North finished fourth in their heat of the girls JV double event.

A couple of “firsts” for Orcas: Barrett North coxed a girls quad and Grace Thompson, who usually coxes, rowed in her first event for this year.
