Orcas Kings Football

by CLAUDIA BRADLEY

Staff reporter

It's that time again! Youth league football for kids ages 9-14 begins August 1.

The program will field two teams: a junior team for ages 9-12 and a senior team for ages 13-14.

The Kings are associated with the North Cascade Football League. Last year they played 10 away games with teams from Sedro Woolley, Everett and Friday Harbor. This year they hope to host several home games on Orcas Island.

Fundraisers are planned to outfit the teams with uniforms, protective gear and to pay for travel expenses. "We want to encourage all children to be a part of the program, participate and have fun -- regardless of financial circumstances," says Sonya Foster, Orcas Kings youth football program manager.

Many adults and parents have volunteered to help with the program including Shane Foster, Dale Briggs, Mike Lawson, Dave Mierau and Justin Fausto. Orcas High School football coach Dennis Dahl will assist them with coaching techniques and help teach the kids football strategy.

Open registration for boys and girls ages 9-14 will be held July 21 from 10:30 a.m.to 2 p.m. behind the elementary school. A birth certificate for proof of age is required. Registration is $100 but no child will be turned away for inability to pay.

Practice will begin on August 1. For more information call Sonya Foster at 376-6714.
