Volleyball: Orcas girls smash Concrete
Concrete continued cracking under Viking pressure on Oct. 26, as the Orcas volleyball squad pulled off a 3-1 win, joining the girls soccer team in victory.
The team served 22 aces, seven of them by libero Makenna Thomas. April Hofmann led offensively with 12 kills, four blocks, and a .421 hitting efficiency. Emily Bodenhamer had six kills and Kathryn Tidwell had five. Ashley Janssen had three blocks.
The team plays Lopez at home today, Oct. 28 for its last regular season game.
“It's going to be interesting today to see how we do,” said assistant coach Hank Date, noting the Vikings' earlier season loss to Lopez.
“We're hoping there's a little bit of fire there,” he said. “We're already set for (league) standings but I hope there's going to be some pride on the line, because we need a little bit of that. This will be last home game, with recognition for the seniors. It will be a tuneup for Saturday, because that's really where we have to bring it.”
Date said he and Sasan are looking for the girls to really pull together as a team, “playing for each other and not as individuals,” in order to take the game to the next level for playoffs.
“We're going to have a hard time getting any further unless we figure that part out,” said Date.
League playoffs this Saturday will determine whether the Vikings go to bi-district playoffs on Nov. 6.
“That final week leading up to districts is just the best week of the year,” he added. “Everything gets so crystalline.”
