Orcas Rec Program invites the community to join in the 12th annual Steve Braun Memorial Triathlon on Sunday, September 5.

The race will include a .4 mile swim in Cascade Lake, a 17 mile bike ride out to Doe Bay and back, and a 3.5 mile train run around Cascade Lake. Participants will meet at the Cascade Lake picnic shelter at Moran State Park for a required 8:30 a.m. pre-race meeting, and the race will begin at 9 a.m.

Pre-registration before September 2 is advised. Forms are available at Wildlife Cycles and outside the Orcas Rec office in the Senior Center, or email ginab@sanjuanco.com or call 376-5339 to request a form. Cost is $45 to compete in the full triathlon; $35 to participate in one or two events; and $30 for participants under 18.

While athletes can register on the day of the race from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., registration after September 2 will cost an additional $10.

“Please pre-register! Pre-registration helps race day go more smoothly for our volunteers and it saves you money and time on race day!” organizers say.

At present it is uncertain whether there will be a 2011 Steve Braun Memorial Triathlon, as Orcas Recreation Program is slated to close down on November 1 when financial support by San Juan County comes to an end.
