San Juan man charged with burglary and malicious mischief

Jacob S. Morehouse, 18, of San Juan Island was charged with burglary and malicious mischief in San Juan County Superior Court on Dec. 2. His arraignment is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Dec. 16. He is currently in custody being held on $50,000 bail.

According to the determination of probable cause, Morehouse turned himself into the Sherriff’s office on Nov. 28.

Morehouse allegedly told deputies that he was staying in a room attached to a garage of a residence and awoke to find himself under a blanket from inside the said residence. He phoned a friend at approximately 1 a.m. who reportedly told deputies Morehouse was having bad thoughts and calmed him down.

He allegedly claimed he remembers nothing but had a “bad feeling in his gut” when he found the blanket. When he searched the house, he found several damaged windows and his own hooded sweatshirt on the kitchen floor; he realized then that he had caused the damage.

According to the probable cause, when deputies searched the house, they found the following: two damaged windows on the garage doors; a broken door inner glass pane; windows on both sides of the inner pane; a damaged window in the front bedroom; French doors at the rear of the house with both doors broken; a damaged window near the bathroom; the toilet lid was ripped off; a hole in the holding tank; holes in the drywall throughout the house; and a broken oven window. The house owner estimated the damage to exceed $50,000.

The homeowner said that Morehouse was verbally prohibited from the residence due to a prior incident.
