San Juan County Sheriff’s Log | Malicious mischief; man leaves knife; commercial burglary

The San Juan County Sheriff’s log responded to the following calls.

Jan. 4

• A call came in for two cases of malicious mischief at two residences on Shaw Island. No suspects are known.

• A deputy observed a moving violation on Orcas Road. The vehicle was stopped and the driver was cited for multiple infractions.

• San Juan Island deputies responded to a residence to settle a dispute. A male subject at this residence agreed to leave the residence.

Jan. 5

• An Orcas driver was cited for speeding 47 mph in a posted 25 mph zone.

• A Lopez Island deputy responded to Ferry Road for a trespassing complaint. It was determined no crime had occurred and that the reporting person suffered from dementia. A relative responded to the residence and agreed to make arrangements to have the reporting person receive 24 hour continuous care.

• A deputy responded to a report of animals at large in Friday Harbor. The owner was informed to keep the dogs on her property.

• A Lopez deputy was dispatched for a report of a driver driving past a school bus with its stop paddle activated. The driver, a juvenile Lopez resident, was cited.

• A deputy was dispatched to a hit and run accident by the Orcas ferry landing.

Jan. 6

• A deputy was dispatched to a theft in the Friday Harbor area. The caller was contacted. No suspect information at this time.

• An Orcas deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding on Orcas Road. The driver was cited for speeding 55 mph in a 40 mph zone.

• An Orcas deputy responded to a potential citizen dispute on Orcas Island. The reporting party was contacted and advised of his options regarding and further issues.

• An Orcas resident reported a case of fraud involving a fraudulent check that was written to the victim for payment of services. The suspect is from another state.

• Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance in front of the Sheriff’s Office in Friday Harbor. A male subject was taken into custody for two counts of assault and one count of harassment.

• A Lopez deputy received a request for assistance from a citizen regarding an ongoing dispute with her landlord. The matter was subsequently resolved amicably between the reporting person and landlord.

Jan. 7

• An Orcas deputy responded to single vehicle injury traffic collision on Olga Road. The driver of the vehicle was driving recklessly and collided into a large rock.

• A Lopez Island deputy received a complaint of a suspicious circumstance after an unidentified and unfamiliar vehicle was observed driving on to a Port Stanley Road property. It was subsequently learned that there was no criminal activity.

• A Lopez deputy responded to Hummel Lake after a motorist saw what appeared to be a juvenile walking on ice in the middle of the lake. The deputy located the involved young male and had a discussion with him regarding the hazards. He agreed to stay off the ice in the future.

Jan. 8

• A deputy in Friday Harbor received a report of a found property. The owner of the property contacted the Sheriff’s Office looking for the property and made arrangements to get his property back.

• A deputy observed a moving violation on Olga Road. The driver was stopped and cited for multiple infractions.

• A deputy in Friday Harbor received a report of a suspicious circumstance. It was reported that a transient male entered a business and asked them to hold onto a knife for him. The male left the knife with the business and left. The knife was taken by the deputy for safe-keeping.

Jan. 9

• A deputy was dispatched to the area of Olga Road and Lindsey Way on Orcas in regards to a single vehicle rollover accident. It appears the vehicle hit black ice and lost control. Driver cited for no insurance and no driver’s license.

• A deputy was dispatched to a civil issue in the San Juan Island area. The reporting deputy contacted the involved parties. The issue involved property access. Both parties agreed to let the matter be settled in court and stay away from each other.

• A Friday Harbor deputy responded to a domestic violence incident in progress. A juvenile suspect was later arrested for DV Assault IV and transported to the Sheriff’s Office. While detained at the Sheriffs Office the juvenile suspect attempted to escape and was caught.

• A Lopez deputy stopped a vehicle for speed. The driver was cited for not having a valid operator license.

Jan. 10

• A deputy responded to a reported commercial burglary in Eastsound. Video surveillance, physical evidence and reports from citizens led to the suspect’s arrest within hours of the report. The male suspect was arrested and transported to Friday Harbor where he has been booked into jail.

• A collision occurred when a Friday Harbor resident fell asleep while driving. The vehicle went off the roadway down an embankment which caused damage to the vehicle. The driver was injured and transported to the hospital.
