Post office employees presented with awards

Safe driving is a hallmark of Orcas Island postal employees.

Eastsound Postmaster Donna McNeil honored her drivers on Nov. 8 and presented a special plaque to Chris Kaufmann for completing 1 million accident-free miles over the course of 30 years. He first began driving for the postal service in 1988, and delivered the mail on Orcas in his Volkswagen van.

Others recognized were Teri Savell, who earned a badge for 25 years of safe driving; Monique Turner, three years; and Jimmy Taylor, two years.

Long-time postal service employee and veteran Mike Haugen was given a badge and red lanyard that reads: “Thank you for your service” and “#PostalProud” in commemoration of Veterans Day.

“The postal service is proud to be one of the largest civilian employers of veterans; there are more than 100,000 current or former service members contributing to the success of this organization,” according to a statement released by Postmaster General Megan Brennan.
