In the midst of torrential downpours on Jan. 24, a red pickup truck driven by an unidentified woman rolled off the end of the Channel Road bridge. The truck tumbled down the rocky embankment before landing right-side up on the mud flat. Emergency personnel reported that the woman was largely unhurt. According to responders, she told them that as she crossed the bridge she swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle drifting into her lane. She then lost control and ended up in the mouth of the lagoon, which was at low tide.

Deer Harbor resident Michael Durlan told the Sounder that the newly resurfaced bridge is more slippery than before, and that drivers tend to cross it at higher speeds.
