Orcas man in critically stable condition after possible assault

A 57-year-old Orcas Island man is in critically stable condition at Harborview Medical Center after sustaining a broken pelvis and several broken ribs on Dec. 21.

“We are trying to determine if a crime occurred,” said San Juan County Sheriff Ron Krebs. “We’re treating this as an assault but we don’t have a full report on it yet.”

The man lives on a boat with another male in Deer Harbor Marina. The injured man’s ex-wife called 911 after he was having trouble breathing. He was flown to St. Joseph’s in Bellingham, where medical personnel arranged for him to be flown to Harborview in Seattle. He is currently in a medically induced coma. His name is not being released to the public.

“I believe it’s a common practice when you are dealing with a lot of pain,” said Krebs. “It’s a pain management tool.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 378-4151.
