Coast Guard assists kayakers stranded near Sucia

The U.S. Coast Guard assisted two kayakers to safety after they became stranded near Sucia Island due to high windson Saturday, Nov. 12.

The kayakers were picked up by the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Swordfish and safely transported to Orcas Island.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound received a cell phone call from the kayakers at about 3:40 p.m. requesting assistance because they felt unsafe in attempting to make the transit back to Orcas Island.

A Canadian Coast Guard Motor Life Boat crew also responded and arrived on scene at the same time as the Swordfish’s crew.

“It’s always best to make a call for help if you feel unsafe on the water before you are in actual distress like these kayakers did,” said Mike Allen, operation unit controller, Sector Puget Sound Commend Center. “We also remind those who are recreating on the water to be knowledgeable and aware of changing weather conditions including wind speed and air temperature.”
