The Orcas Island Board of Fire Commissioners is currently accepting applications for fire commissioner. Following the resignation of commissioner Barbara Bedell, the commission must appoint a replacement. Bedell vacated her seat following 10 years of service to the department and community.
The selected commissioner will serve for the remainder of Bedell’s six-year term, which ends January 1, 2024. The Board of Fire Commissioners is responsible for: (1) Determining levels of service and establishing goals, (2) Determining type and level of funding, approve budgets, tax levies, (3) Establishing policies and approve operational procedures, (4) Guiding strategic planning, (5) Employing key personnel, supervising chief and (6) Representing the district to the budget. Commissioners meet at a general meeting one time per month and as needed for other committees and functions.
