After overwhelming support by the people of Orcas Island, the “Orcas Rec” Initiative has gained enough signatures required to be on the November ballot.

The Orcas Parks and Rec district would be governed by five commissioners, who, once elected, would create a budget and work with the community on a levy that would then go before the voters.

The San Juan County Auditor, who approved 590 signatures, confirmed on Friday, July 24 that the initiative will be on the ballot.

Representatives with the current Orcas Rec program, the Orcas School District, The Funhouse, and others set up shop at the Farmers Market, ferry lines, Olga Days, and other places around the island to collect signatures.

“I have been amazed at the enthusiastic support for the creation of this district,” Orcas Rec board member Kevin O'Brien said. “People care deeply about our children and this great community.”

A public hearing regarding the initiative will be on Tuesday, August 25 at 11:15 a.m. in Friday Harbor. There will also be a special filing period for commissioner candidates at the end of August.
