tCoast Guard and Ferries respond to call near Wasp Pass

An historic sailboat that many locals have seen navigating island waters for years encountered a mishap earlier this week. Around noon on Monday, June 23, the 133’ schooner Adventuress ran aground on a rock near Wasp Pass.

Along with the Coast Guard, the Washington State Ferry Sealth responded to the call, causing delays in afternoon ferry runs. There were 27 people on board, none of whom were injured.

Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles launched an MH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew to the scene as well as a rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Bellingham. The Sealth and Vessel Assist completed removing all of the passengers and crew safely from the vessel.

The Adventuress is owned by Sound Experience, a Puget Sound-based environmental and youth leadership organization that runs programs aboard the wooden schooner.

The Coast Guard will conduct an investigation into the cause of the grounding, which is unknown at this time. No pollution has been reported.
