Marine Stewardship Month events
June 17, 2008 · Updated 5:56 PM
The Board of County Commissioners will proclaim January as Marine Stewardship Month.
With this, a number of activities will take place to heighten the awareness of San Juan County as a Marine Stewardship Area. The community is encouraged to attend and participate. All activities are free and open to the public.
Libraries on San Juan, Orcas and Lopez will have displays providing information about Marine Stewardship throughout the month.
An Envisioning Stewardship Art Contest for all ages, announced in previous editions, will continue throughout January. Cash prizes will be awarded. Submittals are due Jan. 20.
Entry forms can be found at island libraries and on community bulletin boards. For further information, contact Candy at HYPERLINK "mailto:canden@orcasonline.com" canden@orcasonline.com.
The Nature Institute will present a lecture on Orcas by Kevin Britton-Simmons of the UW Friday Harbor Labs Marine Sciences. He will speak on Invasive Species. It will take place Tuesday, Jan 10, at 7 p.m. at Camp Orkila.
The culmination of these events is a birthday party in celebration of the declaration of the San Juan Islands as a Marine Stewardship Area on Jan. 27, 2004.
The public is invited to join in this celebration, Saturday, Jan. 28, from 1 4 p.m. at the Friday Harbor Middle School Commons, 85 Blair Avenue, in Friday Harbor.
