There is now twice-daily Monday through Friday passenger ferry service between Bellingham and Friday Harbor. It began Monday, Nov. 28, and is being provided by the 149-passenger boat Victoria Star 2.

With a grant from the U.S. Federal Transit Administration, the Port of Bellingham has arranged for the ferry service, which consists of departures from the Bellingham Cruise Terminal at 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., and departures from Friday Harbor at 9 a.m and 5 p.m.

The trip time is one hour and 40 minutes.

One-way fares are $10 for adults, $5 for children 6-12, and free for those 0-5.

Coupon books will be available for frequent travelers.

Friday Harbor Mayor Gary Boothman noted that islanders who need to shop or use Bellingham services such as St. Joseph's Hospital should be attracted to this service. “This is a wonderful addition to options for islanders, and it connects Bellingham and Friday Harbor nicely,” he said.

The Victoria Star 2, which is powered by bio-diesel, is able to make the crossing in almost any weather and offers a stable ride for passengers. Amenities on the boat include a snack bar with full beverage service and room for bicycles and bulky store purchases.

The service corresponds with the Whatcom Transportation Authority bus schedule, allowing commuters coming from San Juan Island to catch a bus and spend the day in Bellingham. Rental cars are also available at the dock for just $20 for the half day.

Reservations are not required. For more information about the service call 360-738-8099.
