The Orcas Island Rowing Team traveled to Seattle to compete in its first official race of the academic year at The Tri-Mountain Regatta Sunday Oct. 16, 2005.
The varsity crew team consisting of coxswain Cody Edmonds and rowers Sarah Fucsher-McKinstry, Daniella Armstrong, Jasmine Cline, and Hillary Bernhardt placed second in the Woman's Junior Coxed Quad. The team's time was 25:58. The race was won by the Olympia Area Rowing Club.
Orcas' Novice Crew Team of coxswain Forrest Gropp plus rowers Aly Taylor, Chloe Scott, Nicole Armstrong and Samantha Taylor also placed second, but in the Woman's Novice Coxed Four event. The team's time was 23.05.4. The local team finished behind Everett Rowing Association.
The competition took place on Lake Washington, just south of the I-90 floating bridge, at the Mt. Baker Rowing & Sailing Center. Over 18 rowing clubs participated in the event, many were able to select their rowers from among hundreds of kids.
The race was a head-style event covering 5,000 meters (three miles). Competitors started approximately 15 seconds apart and raced the clock. Due to bad weather conditions the course was shortened and smaller boats were unable to row.
"I am happy with the results of the race. It was great having everybody go home with a red ribbon." said Orcas coach Tina Brown.
The crew team heads to Lake Stevens for its next event, which will take place in mid-November.
