Down 2-0 to Friday Harbor in the best of five. Missing hitter Emily Post Van Der Burg. And without any seniors on this year's team.

No problem. The Lopez volleyball team rose to the occasion, winning the next three games to take the match 21-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 15-10 in the season opener Sept. 9 in Friday Harbor.

Credit Randi Ritchie, who filled in admirably for Post Van Der Burg. Credit Jessica Stephens, who put all 17 of her serves into play, many of them at crunch time in a tense fourth game which found the Lobos trailing 19-22 before they mounted their rally. Credit Brooks Brady, Lisa Vaughn and Isabelle Tetu for their winning hits at the net. And, yes, credit Lopez's successful coach Dave "Chico" Chicovsky for keeping the girls focused and confident.

Lopez also had to rally from an 0-5 deficit to win the fifth and final game of the match.

The Lobos missed a lot of serves during the first two games, Chicovsky said. But when the match was on the line, Lopez wouldn't miss. "We served 96 percent in games three, four and five," the coach said proudly.
