Hazardous waste to be collected

This falls hazardous waste collections, sponsored by San Juan Countys Solid Waste Division, will be held on the following days and times:
Saturday, Sept. 24, Orcas Island Solid Waste Transfer Station, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 25, Lopez Island Solid Waste Facility, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Each islands solid waste facility attendants can provide you with printed guidelines to help you classify and safely handle hazardous products. A minimum fee of $6 will be charged for up to 120 pounds of hazardous waste; quantities over that will cost an additional five cents per pound. Since post-1979 latex paints are not considered hazardous (i.e. lead-free), they can be air-dried or solidified by mixing with sawdust or other absorbents for regular solid waste disposal. A $2 per gallon fee will be charged for latex paint brought to these collections.
Businesses are required to pre-register by calling 370-0503.
