The Lahari Hospice Care Home in Deer Harbor is in the midst of a fundraising campaign to create commemorative gardens for the community’s use on the property. It is also seeking public input on how to expand use of the Deer Harbor facility.

Resident Manager Hyacinth Laurin, Administrator Suzi Rose and Faith in Action Coordinator Linda Abbott were among those from Lahari who welcomed islanders to an open house on March 10. They conducted tours of the facility, served many delicious food items, answered questions, and talked about the fundraising campaign.

Lahari needs another $8,000 before it can create the gardens. Those wishing to make a tax-deductible contribution can send their checks to Box 50, Deer Harbor, WA 98245.

“We are underutilized,” admitted Rose, noting that two islanders spent their last days at Lahari last year. Lahari continues to make itself available for both hospice and respite care. The latter is a planned period of care for an ill or disabled person. It’s offered so the primary caregiver can have a much-needed break from his or her caregiving responsibilities.

Among possible future uses are to make the Lahari facility available for retreats, seminars and speeches. Those with suggestions should contact Hyacinth at Lahari, 376-0540.

The grounds are always available for islanders wishing to come up and engage in quiet meditation or contemplation.

The Faith in Action program, which is offered throughout Orcas Island, provides people who are willing and able to lend a helping hand to those people who are in need of assistance. For more about the program, which is not connected to any organized religion, call Abbott at 376-5885.
