A safe containing approximately $2,000 in cash, plus hundreds of bottles of liquor and beer were taken from American Legion Post #93 (Orcas Island) during an apparent burglary that took place some time late Thursday night, Feb. 24, after the Legion closed for the evening. The cash was in a safe that weighs nearly 200 pounds.

Lemons, limes, cigarettes, stereo equipment, glassware and garbage cans were also taken from the Legion building on Crescent Beach Road in Eastsound.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Department has already recovered 120 bottles of alcohol and another 104 bottles of beer. That’s approximately 70 percent of the amount of liquor taken that evening.

The Legion has insurance, but it does not cover the lost cash, Legionnaire Dave Resch said.

Crescent Service, which is next door to the Legion, was also broken into that evening.

The alleged burglaries remain under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department.
