“I was shocked. I was surprised. I’m on Cloud 9,” exulted Mike Haugen when he was informed Jan. 14 that he has been officially named Eastsound’s new postmaster. Haugen will assume the title on Feb. 5. He replaces Lana Butler, who retired last June.

Haugen has spent his entire career with the postal service in Eastsound. He began as a clerk eight and one-half years ago, and was named officer-in-charge when Butler retired. Several others applied for the job, none of them from Orcas Island.

Haugen hopes to keep the job for the next 18 years, when it will be time for him to retire. “I plan to be here for the whole thing,” he said.

The new postmaster is originally from Sumner. He moved to Orcas Island to assume the role of clerk at the Eastsound Post Office.

His wife, Connie, is manager of the Sea View Theater. The couple has twin children, Sean and Sierra, age nine, and Connie's 18 year old daughter Robyn.
