Don’t be surprised if the person soon knocking at your door is a firefighter or Emergency Medical Technician even if your home isn’t on fire, and nobody in your household is facing a medical emergency.

Rather, the man or woman visiting your home will be from Station Outreach, a new program of the Orcas Island Fire Department in which staff and volunteers who are your neighbors will drop by your home, introduce themselves, chat for a while, and provide information on how residents can prevent injuries and fires.

For example, those who live in the Deer Harbor area can expect a visit from fire department personnel from Deer Harbor, etc.

The firefighters and EMTs will check to see if you have an adequate address sign in front of your home and, assuming you grant them permission, install one in your driveway or another appropriate location.

On subsequent visitors, they’ll check smoke detectors and provide free detector/batterY replacement, and provide advice on fire and accident prevention.

Fire Chief Mike Harris said the goal is to reach everybody on the island. Implementation will be under the direction of the captains of each fire station. Islanders will be notified in advance of the visits, Harris said.
