Islands’ Sounder wins four awards

Sounder Editor Ted Grossman won three first-place awards, while the classified ad staff won second place for Best Presentation of Classified Ads in the annual Better Newspaper Contest conducted by the Washington newspaper Publishers Association (WNPA).

Grossman’s piece “Hobo spider strikes again” was judged first in the category Best Health/Medical Story. His story “Hunter Easterling Saves the Day,” an account of last year’s Orcas - Friday Harbor football game, was judged first in the category Best Sports Reporting. Grossman also won first place for Best Black & White Scenic/Pictorial Photograph with his picture of trumpeter swans in Cascade Lake during last January’s snow fall.

The Journal of the San Juan Islands, the Sounder’s sister newspaper based in Friday Harbor, won 14 awards, including third place for Community Service. The Journal won this prestigious award for its coverage and support of the Family Resource Center’s efforts to raise $60,000 for its building construction project.

Overall, The Journal received three first-place awards, two for second place, and nine for third place.
