Wulff quits Orcas school board
June 17, 2008 · Updated 4:10 PM
The Orcas Island School District Board of Directors has a vacancy that will have to be filled.
Bill Wulff, chairman of the board, has submitted his resignation, citing a desire to spend more time with his family, and a need for less stress in his busy work schedule. He has two sons in high school: John, who will graduate next month, and Mark, a freshman. Wulff is president of Orcas Net, Inc.
His colleagues on the board are expected to accept his resignation when they meet today, May 26, at 5:30 p.m. in the school library. Wulff has been a member of the board since 1996.
Bruce Orchid, the current vice-chairman, will assume the chairmanship. The new member of the board will be appointed by the members themselves. He or she will have to stand for election in November 2005.
In order to be eligible for the vacant position, applicants will have to reside in the Eastsound area which, in this particular case, stretches from near the golf course to West Beach, the North Shore, Ship Bay and Buck Mountain.
Three of the five seats on the school board are by district. The one currently held by Leota Shaner covers Orcas, West Sound and Deer Harbor. Another, now held by Janet Brownell, serves Rosario, Olga, Doe Bay and Waldron Island. Shaners and Brownells seats will also be up for election in November 2005.
The final two seats on the board, held by Susan McCaull and Orchid, are at-large. They will be up for election in November 2007.
The school district will begin advertising for a replacement for Wulff next week. Those who are interested in applying for the position, or who would like to recommend a candidate, should submit a written letter to the Secretary of the School Board, 557 School Board Road, Eastsound, WA 98245. Or call 376-2284.
