Fire destroys auto body shop
June 17, 2008 · Updated 4:06 PM
A building housing Lloyds Auto Body Shop, on Westbeach Road, was totally destroyed by fire on Saturday, April 17, according to the Orcas Island Fire Department.
The owner of the business, whose name was not made available, was burning debris behind his shop when he was distracted, according to a report by the fire department. The fire was left unattended while it spread to a collection of fuels and the back exterior wall of the building. The owner and a customer managed to remove several vehicles from the building, preventing them from being damaged.
The department responded to the call eight minutes after receiving word of the fire. Eastsound engine 21 and five firefighters arrived on the scene at 11:47 a.m.
The fire was brought under control within 25 minutes, and the scene was returned to the owner at approximately 1:30 p.m.
The local Firefighters Auxiliary provided rehabilitation support to the firefighters.
There were no injuries, but the contents were apparently a total loss. San Juan County Fire Marshal Ric Galer is now investigating the matter.
