After two years of negotiations, the Orcas Island Fire Department has reached a collective bargaining agreement with the paramedics. The agreement calls for paramedics to receive two annual cost-of-living increases, each for 2 percent. The first pay hike was for the year 2003, while the second one will be for 2004, and that the full amount of the increase from Jan. 1, 2003 to the date of the next signing of this agreement will be paid as a lump sum to be included in the next regular pay period of San Juan County.

The deal was approved by both fire commissioners and representatives of the San Juan County Paramedic Association at a commission meeting Feb. 18.
