Construction of Country Corners, one of Orcas Island’s largest commercial projects in recent years, was virtually completed this week.

The Eastsound business, owned by Theron Soderlund and Ginny Hawker, includes a fueling station, convenience store, laundry facility, and heated mini-storage units. The laundry facility opened Jan. 16; the fueling station, convenience store and mini-storage units were expected to be ready for customers Jan. 23. a grand opening for the complex will be conducted approximately May 1.

Roosendaal-Honcoop Construction, Inc., of Bellingham served as general contractor for the project. Gary Honcoop of Roosendaal-Honcoop Construction said the company relied heavily on local subcontractors and suppliers, including Island Excavating, New Horizons Painting, North Sound Dry Wall and Sea Island Sand & Gravel, all of Orcas Island, plus Guard Electric of Friday Harbor.

Site work and preparation, including the installation of underground utilities and fuel tanks, began in January 2003. Construction of the building started in August, Honcoop said.

The fueling station has four fuel dispensers, each offering unleaded regular, mid-grade, and premium gasoline, plus diesel. The laundry facility features state-of-the-art equipment, including 19 washers and 20 dryers. Customers will insert money into cash-accepter machines and receive a credit on a payment card that can be used for washers and dryers.

The complex also has one space available for a commercial tenant.
