Feeling Irish? Time for corned beef and cabbage

The Soroptimist Annual Corn Beef and Cabbage Dinner will be held March 16, at the San Juan Island Yacht Club. There will be two seatings this year:

Early Bird Seating, 4:30-6 p.m., $10/person, music by Cynthia Elliott. There will also be a raffle.

Second Seating, 7-9 p.m., $15/person. Auction starts at 8 p.m. and music at 9 p.m. with the Rhythmatics.

Tickets are available at: The Toy Box, Islanders Bank, Dr. Pat Hansen's Chiropractic Clinic, the Hard Clay Cafe or from any Soroptimist member.

Funds raised from the dinner support Soroptimist service projects for the island community.

Are you ready for some good food? Tonight 13 island restaurants will donate half of each dollar spent on meals to the Dollars for Scholars scholarship fund.

The event is timed to coincide with Friday Harbor High School’s Academic Awards night next Wednesday,

Dollars for Scholars was voted “Best Civic Charity” in last year’s Journal poll. Every dollar raised goes to provide scholarship money for students in the program. The only requirement is a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer service during each year in high school. The ultimate goal is to provide a minimum of $1000 to each graduating senior.

The San Juan Conservation District’s Annual Native Tree and Shrub Sale, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the County Fairgrounds in the Grey Top Building.

This is your opportunity to pick-up the plants you ordered earlier in the year and to purchase from a wide variety, at least 20 species, of surplus plants. This is also a great opportunity to meet and talk with Conservation District staff and board members.

New this year: on the day of the sale the following plants will be available for purchase: Ceonathus, Black Gooseberry, Garry Oak, Giant Sequoia, Roemer’s Idaho Fescue, and Blue Wildrye. There will only a limited number of each species; they are only available on a first-come first-served basis.

Also new this year, the Conservation District will be selling 18-inch seedling protector tubes for 50 cents each. Call the San Juan Conservation District, 378-6621.

12 March

San Juan Library Board of Trustees hold their regular meeting 6 p.m. at the library, 1010 Guard Street.

13 March

The Board of Supervisors of the San Juan County Conservation District will hold its regular monthly meeting 8:30 a.m. March 13, at the District offices, 540 Guard Street, Friday Harbor.

14 March

San Juan Community Theatre will hold its annual business meeting 7 p.m March 14 in the theatre’s Gubelman Room. The meeting is open to the public.

The theatre’s financial condition and an update on the long-range plan being formulated by the board of trustees will be discussed. 

Family Night Out, 5:30 p.m., Friday Harbor Middle School and High School Commons. Free family dinner, followed by Family Challenge. Free; donations accepted. Call Island Rec to register, 378-4953, by March 7. Space is limited.

The Lopez Island Garden Club offers "Dwarf Conifers" presented by Jeff Bosler of Orcas Island.

The club meets on the second Thursday of each month with a social hour beginning at 9 am and the program beginning at 10am.

16 March

“Joy of Seasons,” the upcoming art exhibit at the San Juan Library, begins. Bring two- or three-dimensional art pieces to the library between 10 a.m. and noon. All media are welcomed. Call 378-3960.

2002 Spring Gardening Workshop presented by the Master Gardener Foundation of San Juan County, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Friday Harbor Middle School.

This all-day event features Dr. Eugene Kozloff, author of “Native Plants for San Juan Gardens,” and Richard Hartlage, “Using Color in the Garden” along with 10 stylized, season-relevant gardening workshops. There is a $17 registration fee; after March 11, $20.

March 28-April 11

Miniature art competition at San Juan Gallery and framing is sponsoring a miniature art competition.

The competition is open to all artists and calls for original two and three-dimensional works in any media completed in the last two years. Work must be available for sale.

San Juan Island residents Stan Lyman and Ary Hobbel will judge the competition. Lyman is a retired gallery owner and Hobbel is an artist.

First place award will be a $500 cash prize; second place $250, and honorable mention $100 for custom framing at SanJuan Gallery and Framing.
