A Monday fire completely destroyed Orcas islander Ed LeCocq’s single wide mobile home, and all his possessions inside it. The home was located off Enchanted Forest Road.

Despite the loss, LeCocq was remarkably in good spirits when contacted Tuesday morning by The Sounder.

“I have a place to stay,” he said. “and I still have my vehicles and tools.” He was especially appreciative of the help provided by the local branch of the American Red Cross. The local group, headed by Diane Baxter, gave LeCocq $110, which he used to buy some clothes.

LeCocq, who lived alone and is currently a candidate for Orcas Port commissioner, even managed to maintain a sense of humor in the aftermath of his ordeal. “My home is completely black and gray,” he said. “They’re not my favorite colors,” he added.

When asked how he was coping with his total loss, he said, “They should make ‘total’ a four-letter word.”

Those wishing to contact LeCocq can reach his voice mail at 376-2059.

Orcas firefighters were able to put out the blaze. But they were unable to save the house because, when they arrived on the scene, the fire was already completely involved.
