Jim Coffin sworn in as fire commissioner

At Wednesday night's meeting of the Orcas Island Fire Department Board of Directors, four people — a commissioner and two EMTs — raised their right hands and were sworn in.

The board also:

• Heard a committee report on new fire trucks; and

• Signed a deal with the county for fire marshal services.

The first swearing-in was that of Jim Coffin, the department's newest fire board commissioner.

Longtime Commissioner Bob Phalan had tendered his resignation from the board, saying his duties there got too much in the way of his volunteerism as an emergency medical technician for the department. His letter indicated that he looks forward to continuing as a volunteer EMT.
