Some growl, others hiss as mayoral slate announced

What do you get when you throw a cat into a pack of dogs? A fierce political race befitting Orcas, of course! The annual honorary mayor of Eastsound race kicked off Saturday and candidates and their campaign managers promise a competitive, no holds barred race to the finish.

The mayoral race, which features local pets, is an annual fundraiser sponsored by and benefiting Orcas Island Children’s House. Voting is open to both islanders and visitors, who “buy” candidates into office by placing as many votes as they want at area polling locations or online. Look for boxes in businesses around town and Saturday’s at farmer’s market. Each vote benefits the toddler and preschool program of Children’s House. The race concludes July 1st when the new honorary mayor is named and given a key to the village by current Mayor Lewis (a corgle).

This year’s candidates include canines Hudson (managed by Grayson and Heather Rosenberg), Toby (managed by Linda Bannerman and Brad Brown), Tyrone (managed by Pam and Paul Evans) and Skye (managed by Brianna Rose). Rounding out the field is Dr. Spyder, a feline (managed by a Children’s House toddler, Owen, and mom Megan Neal.) The animals have loyal support from their sponsors, Suzie’s Barber Shop, Washington Federal Bank, Jillery, T Williams Real Estate and Island Hoppin’ Brewery.

Meet the mayoral hopefuls and cast your vote at the Farmer’s Market voting booth Saturdays. To get a copy of the Voter’s Guide and learn more about the candidates or cast your vote(s) online visit www.oich.org.
