Happenings at Orcas Senior Center

The “Geology of Orcas Island” presented by Julia Turney and Norman Gilinsky will be at the Orcas Senior Center on Monday, Nov. 4, 1-2:30 p.m.

Do you want to know what the rocks are around your house and what lies below the ground surface? The first half of this 90-minute presentation will cover geologic principles, including rocks and minerals, plate tectonics, geologic maps, geologic time, and how we read the history of the earth from its rocks. The second half will focus on Orcas Island bedrock formations—from the Turtleback Formation to the Nanaimo Group—and on the young glacial sediments that lie above them. We’ll also bring some Orcas Island rock samples to examine and talk about!

A holiday silent art auction is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 7 to Saturday, Dec. 14. Did you miss “HeArt of Orcas?” Are you looking for holiday gifts for loved ones? Maybe you’re looking for a new piece of art to hang on your living room wall? Come to Orcas Senior Center between Thursday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 14 to silently bid on more than 70 affordable pieces of art at the “Holiday Silent Art Auction.” Silent bidding will end on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Orcas Senior Center along with a fun holiday celebration that will include tasty treats and cider.
