Rock Orchestra to play at Doe Bay

All islanders and guests are invited to the big concert on the Doe Bay Resort main stage at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 27, when the Seattle Rock Orchestra will perform their free high-energy show featuring vocalists, orchestra, and band and rock musicians.

It’s the fourth annual Memorial Day weekend concert at Doe Bay Resort, and this year a local twist has been added to the show. Members of the Orcas Island Community Band and the Islands Sinfonia have been blended into the ensemble. It’s a show for young and old alike, this year featuring a variety of tunes that will cover artists such as the Beatles, Michael Jackson, David Bowie and more. Vocalists in 2018 will include Whitney Lyman, Eileen Neff and Timothy Keller.

In addition to the big Sunday show, Saturday evening small ensembles from SRO will play at Doe Bay Cafe.

“Expect many spontaneous, improvised performances, including some unusual offerings,” says SRO founder and artistic director Scott Teske.

Kim Roy, music director and conductor of the group, is inspired by combining rock and classical genres of music. Her conducting brings music of several seemingly unrelated bands and decades to the concert. For example, recently SRO played several shows in Seattle and Walla Walla with an all Beatles program featuring such hits as Can’t Buy Me Love, Eight Days a Week, Yesterday, Penny Lane Hey Jude and more. SRO has collaborated with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Macklemore, Elvis Costello and many others.
