Rock on the Rock kids to make movie musical

Spring has sprung! And Rock on the Rock is back with a spring kids choir show.

This time they’re filming a movie musical that will premiere before the end of the school year at the Sea View Theatre. The project is made possible by generous funding from Orcas Island Education Foundation. The choir will work separately with its usual two age groups:

Ages 6-10: rehearsals Mondays, 3:30-4 p.m. in the Orcas Island High School band room. Ages 11-17: rehearsals Mondays, 4-5 p.m. in the OIHS band room

To sign up, attend the first rehearsal on March 26 at the appropriate times above. The cost for a student to participate is $75. Scholarships are available for those who need them. Classes will consist of choir singing and light choreography. Soloists will be chosen from those classes. Rehearsals will be in the OIHS band room (behind the Old Gym) and will conclude sometime in early May. There will be additional times for filming (TBD, but none over spring break).

Creative team

– Jake Perrine and Grace McCune will direct the movie and do their usual music magic.

– Erin Bennett and Emily Abdon of Orcas Video will shoot the movie.

– Tiffany Loney and Katie Zwilling will choreograph the dance numbers.

– Perrine’s and Val Hellar’s Theater as Literature class will be performing in a scene or two.

Movie details

– The final film will be a 30- to 40-minute short movie consisting primarily of musical numbers.

– The choir will use modern popular songs as we have in our previous shows.

– They’ll be filming primarily in and around the Orcas Island public schools.

– Students will learn songs and dances, and some basics of filmmaking under adult guidance.

– It will comprise the events of a single “day in the life” of OI students, culminating in a school dance that night.

– The overall theme will be “On Orcas, we all come together to celebrate, regardless of who you are.”

In addition to the students in these classes, they will have large group numbers that will utilize as many students and OISD staff as possible.

Students will prerecord singing the music numbers for use in the shooting of the visuals and sync them in editing.
