Rock of Orcas rehearsals starting soon

Get your bangles and bandannas on. The creative duo of Grace McCune and Jake Perrine, who brought you Moulin Rouge and Across the Universe, will serve up Orcas Center’s next musical extravaganza “Rock of Orcas.”

The concert will run May 11–13 and 18–20 and will dive headlong and pell-mell into the grandiose miasma of 80s rock. Like the hairstyles of the era, we will “go big” where the cringe-worthy fear to tread. Journey, Foreigner, Queen and Whitesnake? Of course. And that’s just the appetizer.

Participation in “Rock of Orcas” will consist of its tried-and-true format of “tuition-based fun for all ages”:

Three separate choirs, led by the fearless and talented Grace McCune, will meet on Thursdays starting Jan. 26 in the Madrona Room at Orcas Center:

• Tween choir – Ages 10-15 – 3:15–4:15 p.m.

• Kids choir – Ages 5-9 – 4:15–4:45 p.m.

• Adult choir – Ages 15 and older – 5:15–7:15 p.m.

In addition to the choirs, there will be a kids and an adult dance classes led by the fearless and talented Tiffany Loney. More details on the date and time of those classes coming soon.

The singers and dancers will be accompanied by a live rock band with some of our top-notch local players.

There are no auditions to participate in either the choirs or dance classes. All skills levels are welcomed. Rehearsals are a fun and supportive environment for all and will meet weekly. The choir and dance will not have rehearsals during the weeks of school vacations. In April and May, more regular rehearsals as we get ready for the show will be added.

To register for a class, show up on the day and time of the first rehearsal. The cost is $120 for the adult or tween choirs, or $80 for the kid’s choir. Some scholarships will be available – contact McCune or Perrine if you need financial assistance.
