Dressed in a wide array of period costumes including poodle skirts, bobby socks and tie-dye t-shirts and carrying purple hula hoops, members of the Orcas Island Yacht Club and their guests, including members of the Orcas Island Dance Club and Members of the Orcas Island Community Band held their 2008 Rock and Roll Dance on Friday, March 21 at the Odd Fellows Hall in Eastsound. The acclaimed Fabulous Rhythmatics Band of Friday Harbor performed an eclectic mixture of top ten hits from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. The Hall was decorated for the occasion with hundreds of balloons and large bouquets of pink carnations. In keeping with the car culture of the period, a vintage 1966 Ford Thunderbird Landau, and a 1963 Corvette Stingray Coup were parked by the front door. One of the guests later said that when he left, he saw Elvis at the wheel of the Thunderbird !

The event was hosted by OIYC members Dianne and Richard Jordan and Julie and Bruce Brackett. Bruce was unable to attend because he is recovering from emergency heart surgery. All of us wish him a speedy and complete recovery.

The OIYC is the major organization serving boating enthusiasts on Orcas Island. The club facilities and dock are located in Westsound.
