The National Theatre production of “Hedda Gabler,” is broadcast live from London to Orcas Center Saturday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m. NT Live brings us a slick, stylish, modern production of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play. The production is sold out at the National Theatre – the only way to see the play now is in the cinema!

Hedda and Tesman have just returned from their honeymoon and the relationship is already in trouble. Trapped but determined, Hedda tries to control those around her, only to see her own world unravel. Hedda proclaims: “I’ve no talent for life.” Just married, bored already, Hedda longs to be free.

Ruth Wilson (“Luther,” “The Affair,” “Jane Eyre”) plays the title role in a new version by Patrick Marber (“Notes on a Scandal,” “Closer”). Time Out notes that this production rejects the proto-feminist reading wherein its heroine feigns victim, “This Hedda destroys not because she is a woman or oppressed, but because she feels alienated by the smug academics and their dry certainties. She wants to take back control.” Evening Standard raves, “Ruth Wilson brings a thrilling volatility to the title role.”

Tony Award-winning director Ivo van Hove returns to National Theatre Live with this fresh innovative production of Ibsen’s masterpiece. The play is set in modern-day London and the style of the production is sparse and minimalist. The rest of the cast includes recognizable film and TV faces, including Kyle Soller (Poldark) and Rafe Spall (The Big Short).
