Peter Fisher, renowned local photographer, activist and long time Island resident opens a new show at the Edna Gallery in Eastsound this season with Mexico: Light Travel on Saturday, April 19. An opening night reception of wine and appetizers will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. and a slide show will be featured at 8 p.m.

Fisher is perhaps best known for his “Island Beauty” photographs of Orcas Island landscapes and abstracts. In February, Fisher traveled to Mexico and was inspired to play with the feel of light and the brightness of color images particular to that region.

“My inspiration for this artwork is to explore some of the abstract qualities of light. In one photograph, for example, sunlight transforms a pressed glass window from a hard cold material into a set of golden curves, dancing like backlit waves on a shore,” said Fisher. “Whether a street scene or architectural detail, theses images playfully entice the viewer to enjoy the spontaneous and miraculous confluence of form, tonality, and illumination that is special to Mexico.”

Fisher shoots all his pictures on slide film and prints them digitally from his darkroom. The framed large size prints that will be on display feature the high quality cotton papers, pigment inks and lacquer coatings for longevity and color quality that rivals paintings. Created in limited editions, small, medium and large size matted and framed prints will be available for sale to fit any wall space.
