Don’t miss Olga Daze, July 20

Submitted by Lorna Rhodes.

Don’t miss Olga Daze! Festivities in Olga begin in front of the Community Center at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 20.

The day will be better than ever this year, with something for everyone.

Come for breakfast at the bake sale, which will feature the world-famous maple bars, made on the spot. Stay for a delicious lunch of hotdogs, homemade chili and chili dogs, and get back to the bake sale for a homemade dessert.

The Olga Daze Parade is not to be missed. It will start at noon with an Orcas Island fire truck in the lead, loaded up with all the kids. During the parade, we’ll have an unofficial “Weird/Funny Hat” contest, so show up wearing your best invention!

Of course, as always, the parade is for everyone—no spectators, all participants!

Live music will be performed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. by our own Carl Burger and other talented local musicians.

There will be lots of fun for children, including games, face painting and a pie-eating contest.

An Olga Daze tradition is the raffle of a beautiful handmade quilt by Betty Marcum and Dorothy Lundquist. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase until 2:30 p.m., with the drawing at 3 p.m. Purchasers need not be present to win.

We’ll have an Olga history booth and an “Olga Grown” table of flowers, vegetables and plant starts; if you’re a gardener, bring your contributions!

Expect a fantastic “Barn/Yard Sale,” open until 2:30 p.m. Contact Steve Emmes at 376-1461 for special arrangements.

The first Olga Daze festivities, over 20 years ago, included a parade, a bake sale and hot dogs. Today the event has blossomed into a full day of fun for everyone, made possible by the volunteer labor of many, many Olga residents.

Olga Daze is the community’s only major fundraiser for the club and its landmark building.
