Community foundation presents walking tour of Eastsound

Eastsound is buzzing this year. The summer season in full swing, business is booming and many local organizations are busy remodeling, expanding and planning new developments.

Orcas Island Community Foundation is organizing a tour of Eastsound on Monday, Aug. 28 with Liz Leroy, owner’s representative for the library and school district projects and Jim Jonassen, architect and author of the visioning document that the Eastsound Planning Review Committee published last year.

The tour will start with the proposed changes covered by the upcoming bond and levy for the school campus as well as the recent remodeling at the library and the Funhouse. Then, attendees will check out the area where OPAL is planning the April’s Grove rental housing, have a tour of the new Orcas Community Resource office and see some of the other new housing developments in the core of town.

The plan is to meet at the school in front of the old gym at 3 p.m. The will walk for an hour or so, finishing up at the OICF office with time for little libations and discussion. Please RSVP by the Aug. 25. There may be two tours if there is a large response.

Much of the recent activity in Eastsound has been fueled by Bob Henigson’s legacy gifts. His investments in the community will last many generations.
