Class on plant breeding

Dan Borman presents “Everywhere is an Island: Plant Breeding and Staple Crop Resilience in a Changing Climate,” a potluck dinner and discussion on Saturday, April 8 from 6–8:30 p.m. The cost of the class is $10 and to register, visit https://goo.gl/LXHspK.

Borman will break down the biology of plant breeding and practical approaches to selecting plants – annuals, perennials and tree crops – for specific and regionally appropriate attributes. He will discuss the contemporary political and climactic framework which makes it critical that we as gardeners and citizens take up the role of plant breeders. He will share some of his own compelling stories of traveling internationally to locate parent varieties for breeding staple crops for the San Juan Islands.

The aim of this conversation will be to both inspire and empower you with the tools you need to become a plant breeder in your own back yard. This is a participatory exploration in which Borman will field questions and assess the classmates’ areas of specific interest which could lead to future classes.
