An update from the senior center

Technology GiveOrcas Grant

The senior center would like to thank everyone who stepped up to support them for this year’s Technology GiveOrcas Grant in the Orcas Island Community Foundation’s 2018 spring grant cycle. The senior center is building a program to help seniors gain and maintain technical skills they need to remain connected and relevant in today’s computer-dependent world.

The Orcas Senior Center will provide elders access to technology equipment (via implementation of weekly computer labs and loaner equipment), and learning opportunities including workshops teaching device utilization, accessing services online; access to telemedicine, technological interventions; and a stipend will be offered to participants for individual consultations.

In June, the center will create a committee to implement and support this initiative; if you are interested in participating, contact Sara or Kristin via orcasseniorcenter@gmail.com or 360-376-2677.

New weekly coffee shop is now open to community

You can now enjoy coffee and treats on Tuesdays at the Orcas Senior Center. Have a cup of coffee or a sip of tea with friends at the center’s self-serve coffee shop open Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m.-noon.

Refreshments and goodies are free to all as this offering is part of the new initiatives launched from last year’s Challenge Grant.

Watch for other new initiatives like monthly TED talks shown on the big screen starting in July; get your groove on at weekly exercise classes; join the center for summer creative workshops and fun trips; and keep an eye out for the new senior tech lab and workshops coming soon.

In the fall, the senior center will launch a emergency preparedness series of workshops with kits and keynote speakers.
