A vigil for the whales and wake for Tahlequah’s baby

A gathering will be held to mourn the loss of another Orca whale calf and acknowledge the grief of the Southern resident orca at Eastsound Waterfront Park on Sunday, Aug. 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event is a sister vigil with Lopez Islanders. Bring a chair or blanket.

These whales hover on the edge of extinction and have not had a successful birth in more than three years. The group is requesting 17 minutes of silence on the sea by all motorized vessels, from noon until 12:17 p.m. to honor the number of days Tahlequah carried her dead baby.

“Come share your songs and prayers and send them out across the Salish Sea,” say organizers.
