On behalf of Orcas Rotary, I would like to thank the Sounder and especially Mandi Johnson for the excellent articles, both online and in print, before our public meeting featuring Skagit Valley College (SVC). On March 10, SVC President Dr. Tom Keegan brought his wonderful team to speak on opportunities for higher education in our area.
Dr. Laura Cailloux spoke to us about their Marine Maintenance Technology degree, a response to our islands’ needs for specialists. The San Juan County Economic Development Council received a grant to provide free training and place graduates in local businesses. A new class begins in April. (Registration: sanjuansedc.org/trades) Dr. Jill Johnson highlighted her upcoming poetry class to be given in April at the Orcas library. Randy Martin, San Juan Center director, gave updates on the Road Scholar program and other offerings. Dr. Keegan emphasized continued learning programs, including retreats on civic discourse, with practice in handling conflicts. (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Our island has much potential for higher education. We appreciate the support of the Sounder in covering this important topic.
