May 6 and 9

Whale of a Show auditions: High school, middle school, and elementary school level categories. Auditions are at Orcas Center at 3:30 p.m. or Saturday, May 9 at 11 a.m.

Friday, May 8

Dance party: Dragonfly dance party at Odd Fellows Hall, featuring world beat, vintage soul, hip hop, and electronica, $10admittance or $5 entry for those who arrive before 9:30 p.m. Proceeds go the Odd Fellows scholarship fund.

Deer Harbor Community Club Potluck: May is “Island Treasure Month.” Enjoy the final potluck of the season, a preview of a few treasures from the upcoming DHCC rummage sale, and entertainment by Carolyn Cruso. Bring a place setting and a dish to share. 6:30pm. Info: 376-5404.

Orcas Farmers’ Market: The next two farmers' markets will be held on Prune Alley between A Street and Fern Street.

Saturday, May 9

Music Lovers' Seminar: George Shangrow is guest lecturer of Music Lovers’ Seminar at the St. Francis Catholic Church, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuition is $20. Call 376-6636 or e-mail Victoria@oicmf.org.

Yard sale: Children's House is holding a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., 36 Pea Patch Lane. Lemonade and cookie sale will be offered by the parents and students.

Olga community club potluck: Last of the season, 5:30: social hour, 6:30: dinner, 7:30: election of officers and annual meeting.

Karaoke: At the Lower Tavern, starting at 9 p.m.

Writer’s Roundtable: The topic is “Writers On Writing” and the writing process. Consider bringing quotes or short articles to share with the group. From 1 to 3 p.m. at the library.

Murante and Osborn in concert: Seattle singer/songwriter Larry Murante and Orcas Island’s Susan Osborn will perform at The Living Room Gallery on North Beach Road, 7:30 p.m. Admission: $5 to $10 sliding scale.

Bake sale: Orcas Montessori Pre-School Mother’s Day Bake Sale, 10 a.m to 3 p.m., Island Market. Info: Cathy Faulkner at 376-2434.

Waffle breakfast: At Teezer's from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to raise funds for Louise Sasan. A $10 donation includes waffles with toppings of choice, sausage and bacon, and a drink.

Island Sinfonia: Spring Mother’s Day concert at Orcas Center, 3 p.m. Tickets 10 at the box office; no charge for music students. More information: 376-6579.

Chess: The Orcas Chess Club, Eastsound Library, 3:30 p.m., every Monday afternoon.

Al-Anon: The Al-Anon group on Orcas meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Parish Hall to the right of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Wednesday, May 6

High school band: The High School Band's Final Concert will be at the LCCA, 7:30 p.m., with special guest Hawk Arps. Donation only; the concert will benefit benefit the Lopez Island Family Resource Center and Playing for Change.

Friday, May 8

Photo exhibit: An opening reception for Steve Horn at the Lopez Center for Community and the Arts, 5 to 6:30 p.m., to open his exhibition “Pictures Without Borders: Bosnia Revisited,” on display through June 17.

Saturday, May 9

Bingo: Warm-up game begins at 6:45 p.m., regular play is 7 p.m. at Woodmen Hall. Supports the Lopez Senior Center. Contact Diana Bailey at 468-4301 for more information.
